Coming Soon: Wharfside Village USVI
MIXMA collaborated with designer Tristan Ewald of Studio Armin to develop a series of restaurants and bars in the island town of St. John, USVI. Previously a designer at INGRAO in Manhattan, Tristan moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands in summer of 2019 to oversee the design and construction responsibilities for the wharsfide village mixed use development.
The first space to open in the project is set to be Kati Ligo (Formerly Island Cork Wine Bar). The center of the space prominently features a D-shaped wraparound bar composed of digitally fabricated and hand polished Azul Macauba blue quartzite imported from Brazil. MIXMA hand selected the blue stone for its unique and intense vein qualities, and created the bar for this space as well as a collection of platters and cheese boards from this opulent material.
Thoughts for the wine bottle holders originally centered around slip cast and fired porcelain units. As we began to explore more artisanal production methods for the interior scheme, we opted to make a series of hand carved and chiseled pieces out of solid volcanic stone quarried near to the MIXMA factory in Guadalajara.
